PetBoogaloo Awards Renee Carleton of the Pet Food Bank

PetBoogaloo’s Hero of the Month

The Pet Food Bank, started by Renee Carleton, is a non-profit organization that collects and distributes pet food and supplies for animal rescue groups. PetBoogaloo is proud to honor Renee Carleton as PetBoogaloo’s Hero of the Month.

The Pet Food BankIn 1993, Renee started volunteering for the Friends For Pets Foundation. She helped transport dogs and did home visits for potential adoptive families. Renee quickly learned of the difficulties that animal rescue facilities faced. Besides the daily care of the animals, the incoming donations didn’t always cover food and vet bills. Because of this, Renee began to look for ways to reduce the cost of buying dog food.

Renee found out that many stores were destroying damaged bags of pet food. The warehouses did not want to keep these bags of dog food around. Yet, they had no one to pick it up. That’s when Renee started The Pet Food Bank, and began to pick up food in her car. The amount of donated dog food began to increase, and within a year, her car was too small. Renee borrowed trucks from friends, and started sharing some of the dog food with other rescues. The amount continued to grow. What was once was a carload, quickly became a truckload, and that turned into an 18-wheeeler truckload.

Before Renee knew it, transportation services, a forklift, warehouse space, and volunteers were needed. Fortunately, Renee has been successful in getting these services donated. Last week alone, The Pet Food Bank received over 80,000 pounds of pet food.

Food is not the only items Renee is collecting. Many of the rescues need crates, collars, leashes, and medical supplies. Renee searched and found sources to donate these items. These sources also brought in supplies for cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, bunnies, birds, turtles, and reptiles.

Currently The Pet Food Bank is in need of funds to purchase a new forklift. They can also use gas cards, as each food bank delivery costs about $120 in gas money. The Pet Food Bank is a non-profit organization, so all donations are tax deductible. Those interested in the helping The Pet Food Bank, can visit their website at .

PetBoogaloo is proud to honor Sherry Conisbee and the entire Soi Dog Rescue team, as PetBoogaloo’s Hero of the Month.

In Bangkok, stray dogs and cats continue to exist on the streets in frightening numbers and in the most appalling conditions. Thankfully, the Soi Dog Rescue team is there, to reduce the number of stray dogs and cats, and to relieve their suffering through  community-based spay/neuter projects.

At Soi Dog Rescue in Bangkok ( ), the volunteers and Thai staff devote their efforts to helping stray dogs and cats who live on the streets and in the temples. Sherry Conisbee, the co-founder of Soi Dog Rescue, says, “There are an estimated 300,000 dogs and untold hundreds of thousands of cats; too many for our small group to cover. But we do what we can.” Soi Dog Rescue focuses on spay/neuter programs in target communities in conjunction with community educational programs.

In just over three years, Soi Dog Rescue has managed to spay over 2,567 cats and dogs. Soi Dog Rescue also runs an adoption service which gives a few lucky strays permanent homes in Thailand and in the USA.

Soi Dog Rescue currently relies on volunteer overseas vets or treatments at private vet clinics in Bangkok, both time-consuming to arrange and expensive. Having a full-time vet on board will cost as little as USD 1,000 per month (around $35,000 Thai baht). This will significantly increase the number of sterilizations they can perform each day and their ability to cope with more vaccinations and treatments for the thousands of sick, injured and abused cats and dogs on the city’s streets.

Petboogaloo ( ) salutes Sherry Conisbee and the team at Soi Dog Rescue for their dedication to improving the lives of Bangkok’s street dogs. And in their doing so, creating a happier healthier environment for everyone.

Meet a PetBoogaloo Hero

PetBoogaloo would like to acknowledge a true hero. Meet Janine Licare, co-founder of
Kids Saving the Rainforest.

My name is Janine and I live in the middle of some of the most beautiful rainforest you can imagine, in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.

When I was 9 ½ years old, my friend and I decided that we wanted to create artwork to sell in order to make some spending money, so we set up a roadside stand.

Within just a few days, we knew that we should put to use what we earned for something much more important. That’s when we had the idea to start saving the rainforest.

Ever since we were little, we acknowledged the fact that it is home to many kinds of animals as well as other living organisms such as trees, plants and insects.

The rainforest is an amazing place and we vow to do anything and everything we can to save it. It is very important that we preserve the environment because by saving it, we make sure that our future is protected and available for the next generations. If it disappears, then so does our planet.
